Summary of the National Water Monitoring Plan

The development of the National Water Monitoring Plan (NWMP) is in line with the South African Constitution of 1996, White Paper on a National Water Policy for South Africa, Chapter 14 of National Water Act (Act No. 36 of 1998), National Water Resource Strategy (I and II) and the National Water and Sanitation Master Plan. Two of the key strategic actions of Chapter 13 and 14 of the National Water Resource Strategy 2nd Edition (2013) are to develop the National Water Monitoring Plan for Water and Sanitation in South Africa. Consequently, the Directorate: Water Information Integration (WII) has been tasked with the responsibility to coordinate and facilitate the development of the NWMP. The 3rd version of the NWMP has been developed through extensive stakeholder consultation. The main objective of the NWMP is to identify and prioritise gaps in the South African water resource management value chain and assist in addressing them in a systematic manner. The focus of the NWMP is on strengthening the following main components of the water resource management value chain: Governance Operations, Monitoring Network Infrastructure, Data Management, Information Systems, and Laboratory Services.
