National Water Act Definition Water Management Area (WMA) is an area established as a management unit in the National Water Resource Strategy within which a Catchment Management Agency will conduct the protection, use, development, conservation, management and control of water resources in South Africa. [Source: National Water Act (Act No. 36 of 1998)]. Why are WMAs important? WMA are the geographical areas within which water resource management will take place in South Africa.
