Peaty soils are typically associated with wetlands and bogs where saturation with water inhibits the breakdown of organic residues, especially under cooler climatic conditions. They are more fertile than soils of surrounding uplands. The O horizon gradually decomposes when drained and cultivated, and may even turn severely acidic if sulfides are present (Soil form: Champagne).
