IMPLEMENTATION AND MAINTENANCE OF THE WATER RECONCILIATION STRATEGY FOR RICHARDS BAY AND SURROUNDING TOWNS

The DWS has commissioned this three-year Study (2018 – 2020) for the Implementation and Maintenance of the Water Reconciliation Strategy for Richards Bay and Surrounding Towns. The Reconciliation Strategy for Richards Bay and Surrounding Towns was developed in 2015 with the main objective to identify steps to be taken to ensure that enough water will, in the foreseeable future, be available to meet domestic and industrial water requirements in the City of uMhlathuze Municipal Area. The Reconciliation Strategy provided recommendations for the sequence of management and structural interventions required to maintain acceptable assurances of supply to all users in the City of uMhlathuze Local Municipality, at the same time ensuring that the Ecological Water Requirements (Reserve) are not compromised.

Outcomes of the Reconciliation Strategy (2015)

The original Reconciliation Strategy (2015) suggested the Richards Bay Water Supply System would be in a deficit in 2023 for the medium growth water requirement scenario and by 2020 for the high growth water requirement scenario. A number of intervention options exist to address the deficit as summarized below.
