Top Previous Next

Definition

The process of abstracting groundwater to lower the water table and/or piezometric level.

Description

The removal of groundwater from a certain area, to allow some form of activity e.g. tunnels, mines, buildings etc

Why is dewatering important?

Dewatering allows certain underground activities such as mining to occur in a naturally saturated rock.  Dewatering also causes subsidence where pore pressure is released in voids which are usually filled with water.
