Definition

The upper surface of the saturated zone of an unconfined aquifer at which pore pressure is equal to that of the atmosphere.

Description

This is the interface between the unsaturated zone and groundwater and may rise and fall seasonally.

Why is the water table important?

It marks the top of the groundwater body.
