Artesian Borehole

Top Previous Next

Definition

Boreholes that penetrate confined aquifers in which the piezometric surface is above ground level,  so that the boreholes spontaneously discharge water without being pumped.

Description

A flowing borehole from which groundwater is discharged because the piezometric level is at an elevation higher than the borehole collar.

Why is an artesian borehole important?

Artesian boreholes provide an indication of confined conditions.
