Description

A constructed hole in the ground from which groundwater can be abstracted, recharged or observed.

Why are boreholes important?

Boreholes provide access to the sub-surface and can be used for abstracting, monitoring and recharging groundwater.  They also provide information on subsurface conditions.  The rate and volume of abstraction needs to be managed to protect the aquifer system as a whole.
