Groundwater Allocation

Top Previous Next

Definition

That volume of groundwater that can be allocated for use after consideration of the Reserve and Resource Quality Objectives.

Description

This is a South African term specifically applied in the quantification of the groundwater component of the Reserve.  It is calculated by subtracting environmental water requirements and basic human needs from recharge to a significant water resource.  This does not take into account the existing groundwater use in that significant water resource.

Why is groundwater allocation important?

Groundwater allocation is the starting point from groundwater resources are managed in South Africa.
