Definition

The addition of water to the saturated zone, either by the downward percolation of precipitation or surface water and/or the lateral migration of groundwater from adjacent aquifers.

Description

Recharge is the addition of any water to the saturated zone; and involves a number of different recharge mechanisms.

Why is recharge important?

Recharge is crucial for the ongoing replenishment of aquifers.
