A pit used for the disposal of human excreta, particularly prevalent in rural areas.

Description

A latrine is a method of disposal of human waste used in rural areas and much of the developing world.

Why is a latrine important?

Pit latrines can be a source of groundwater contamination that can have disastrous consequences to rural communities dependent on groundwater for a source of water.
