Definition

The introduction of any substance into groundwater systems by the action of man.

Description

The degradation of natural water quality as a result of man's activities, regardless of whether or not contaminant concentrations reach levels that cause significant degradation of water quality and restrict its use.

Why is contamination important?

Contamination may cause the quality of groundwater to deteriorate to a point that is unsafe for use and impact negatively on the environment.
