Definition A point where subsurface water emerges at surface, usually as a result of topographical, lithological or structural controls. Description Springs are points or areas were groundwater exits the subsurface environment, either as a result of gravity or pressure. They can be perennial or ephemeral and can yield either small or large volumes of water. Famous springs in South Africa include Malones Eye and the Uitenhage Spring. Why are springs important? Springs are important sources of water for both people and the environment.
