Definition

All water occurring beneath the earth's surface, including soil moisture, that in the vadose zone and groundwater.

Description

Subsurface water includes all water located in the pore spaces of soil and rocks.  Not all subsurface water is groundwater that can potentially be impacted by groundwater abstraction.

Why is subsurface water important?

Subsurface water is an integral part of the hydrological system.
