Definition The subsurface zone below the water table where interstices are filled with water under pressure greater than that of the atmosphere. Description The saturated zone is that part of the earth’s crust beneath the regional water table or piezometric surface in which all voids, large and small, are filled with water under pressure greater than atmospheric. Why is the saturated zone important? The saturated zone forms the groundwater system as apposed to the subsurface water which includes both the saturated and unsaturated zones.
