Definition The NWRS is mandated by the National Water Act, Act 36 of 1998, to describe the way in which the water resources of South Africa must be protected, used, developed, conserved, managed and controlled. Description The NWRS must set out the strategies, objectives, plans, guidelines and procedures of the Minister and institutional arrangements relating to the protection, use, development, conservation, management and control of water resources. The way in which this will be achieved is described in Section 6 of the National Water Act. Why is the NWRS important? The NWRS provides information about the ways in which water resources will be managed and the institutions to be established. It provides quantitative information about the present and future availability of and requirements for water in each of 19 water management areas.
