Definition

Pollution from widely distributed sources instead of from a discrete or definable point.

Synonym

Diffuse source pollution

Description

Pollution from activities that take place over a wide area (e.g. herbicides and pesticides from farming).

Why is non-point source pollution important?

Pollution associated with non-point sources impacts a large area, are often difficult to delineate and therefore requires a different approach to identify and manage to that for point source pollution.
