The Department of Water and Sanitation will once again raise awareness about the impact of pollution into water resources through its annual campaign, Clear Rivers.

The 2023 Clear Rivers campaign will be undertaken under the theme, “South Africa is water-scarce country, let’s clean up and protect our water resources”. The campaign is linked to Nelson Mandela International Day which encourages everyone to make a difference in their community, in efforts to change the world for better.

The health of our rivers in South Africa is threatened by excessive use of water and the riverbanks. If we pollute the river in one place, we affect the condition of the river downstream. Therefore, active and responsible citizenry is encouraged across spectrum where people from all walks of life become participants in promoting healthy rivers. The relationship between communities and healthy rivers can never be overstated, as it is community members who must take care of their environment to ensure that it is not filtered with filthy litter.

During this month, the Department and its entities will be embarking on various activities to raise awareness about the negative impact of filthy rivers by taking the communities along to clean rivers and streams across the country.
