The Strategy focuses on the following technical tasks:
Assessment of the water resource availability.
Developing water requirement scenarios.
Evaluation of bulk infrastructure plans and identification of proposed extensions.
Identification and assessment of appropriate water resource augmentation options.
Investigations of possible wastewater re-use options.
Identification of environmental and water quality related issues.
Documentation of the reconciliation process and strategy.
The following objectives have been set for the water reconciliation strategy:
To identify interventions that will reconcile the water requirements with the available water for the next 25 years.
To develop a strategy that will be flexible to accommodate future changes in actual water use.
To integrate augmentation and bulk supply options to achieve optimised overall benefits.
To engage extensively with stakeholders to build partnerships and promote co-operation.
Assess the potential savings that can be achieved through water conservation and water demand management measures as well as the potential for reconciling current and future water requirements.
Communicate the findings regularly to all stakeholders.
The purpose of the Strategy is to achieve reconciliation of the water supply
available from the Algoa WSS sources with the water requirements up to 2040, of
the various water services authorities served by the Algoa WSS, mainly the NMBM,
and the industrial and agricultural water users in the area. The Strategy aims
for adequate levels of assurance of supply within the constraints of
affordability and at appropriate levels of service to users, whilst ensuring
protection of current and possible future resources, and efficiency of operation
and management of the Algoa WSS, in an integrated and sustainable manner.
