Top Previous Next

Definition

The act of removing water from a groundwater resource.

Description

The removal of water from an aquifer by pumping.

Why is abstraction important?

Abstraction is a means of obtaining water from a groundwater system.  However, abstraction needs to be properly managed to avoid over-abstraction or the induction of contamination into the groundwater system.
