National Water Act Definition Aquifer means a geological formation which has structures or textures that hold water or permit appreciable water movement through them. [Source: National Water Act (Act No. 36 of 1998)]. Description A formation, group of formations, or part of a formation that contains sufficient saturated permeable material to store and transmit water; and to yield economical quantities of water to boreholes or springs. Why is an aquifer important? An aquifer is the storage medium from which groundwater is abstracted. It should be managed properly and at all times be protected from over-exploitation and contamination.
