Definition

Defined as the abiotic (physical and chemical) and biotic components, habitats and ecological processes contained within rivers and their riparian zones and reservoirs, lakes, wetlands and their fringing vegetation.

Why are aquatic ecosystems important?

Aquatic ecosystems are protected under the National Water Act by means of the Reserve.  The health of an aquatic ecosystem is an indication of the condition of the surface water body and associated groundwater system.
