Formal definition

A zone of displacement in rock formations resulting from forces of tension or compression in the earths crust.

Description

A fracture or zone of fractures along which there has been displacement of the sides relative to one another parallel to the fracture.

Why are faults important?

Faults can form conduits for groundwater movement and groundwater contamination; as well as impermeable zones where metamorphism of the rocks have taken place.
