Formal definition Highly permeable formations, usually with a known or probable presence of significant fracturing. They may be highly productive and able to support large abstractions for public supply and other purposes. Water quality is generally very good (less than 150 mS/m). Description These are generally high yielding aquifer systems that can be developed to supply large quantities of groundwater. Examples of major aquifer systems include dolomitic aquifers, aquifers associated with the Table Mountain Group and the extensive Zululand Primary Aquifers. Why is the major aquifer system important? Major aquifer systems can be developed to supply large quantities of good quality groundwater.
