Definition

A fourth order catchment in a hierarchal classification system in which a primary catchment is the major unit.

Description

Quaternary catchments are the principal water management units in South Africa; and 1946 have been demarcated.

Why are quaternary catchments important?

Catchments are a basic hydrological unit.  The quaternary catchment is the basic unit for water resource management in South Africa.
