Definition

All surface and subsurface flow from a catchment, but in practice refers to the flow in a river i.e. excludes groundwater not discharged into a river.

Description

Runoff is a term used to describe the water from rain, snowmelt or irrigation that flows over the land surface into streams or other surface waters or land depressions.

Why is runoff important?

Runoff is an important flow mechanism in the hydrological system.
