Seasonal Stream

Top Previous Next

Definition

These streams are driven by seasonal rainfall patterns and flow occurs between 20% and 80% of the time. These streams have a limited baseflow component with little or no groundwater discharge.

Description

These streams occur in areas with marked seasonal rainfall patterns where flow ceases during dry periods.  They differ from ephemeral streams in that flow occurs for weeks to months after rainfall events.

Why are seasonal streams important?

Groundwater potentially plays an important role in sustaining aquatic ecosystems during dry periods.
