Definition

An aquifer in which groundwater moves through secondary openings and interstices, which developed after the rocks were formed.

Description

The interstices through which groundwater moves were formed after the rock was formed.  The secondary opening form as a result of weathering, fracturing, faulting and dissolution.

Why are secondary aquifers important?

Approximately 90% of aquifers in South Africa are secondary in nature.
