Definition

An aquifer that is needed to supply 50% or more of the domestic water for a given area, and for which there are no reasonably available alternative water sources should the aquifer be impacted upon or depleted.

Description

Sole source aquifers are used to meet at least 50% of a settlements water demand.

Why are sole source aquifers important?

Groundwater is the only source of water to many towns, villages and rural communities.  These aquifer systems need proper management and appropriate protection.
