Definition

A chemical compound containing the bivalent group SO4.

Description

Sulphate is an ion found in groundwater and can be a good indicator of contamination resulting from mining activities (e.g. acid mine drainage from coal and gold mines).

 

Why is a sulphate important?

High concentrations is an indication of possible impacts from mining activities and renders groundwater unfit for use.
