Definition

The vulnerability of groundwater to contaminants generated by human activities taking into account the inherent geological, hydrological, hydrolgeological characteristics of an aquifer.

Description

This relates to the tendency or likelihood for contamination to reach a specified position in the groundwater system after introduction at some location above the uppermost aquifer.  A range of factors are used to consider whether an aquifer is vulnerable.

Why is vulnerability important?

Vulnerability gives an indication of how susceptible an aquifer is to contamination.
