Salinisation

Definition

The increase or accumulation of salt in the environment such as soil and groundwater.

Description

An increase in the salt content in soil and groundwater often as a result of inappropriate irrigation or over abstraction of fresh water aquifers close to saline water bodies.

Why is salinisation important?

Salinisation results in the degradation of groundwater quality.
