Definition

The replacement of fresh groundwater by saline water in an aquifer, usually as a result of groundwater abstraction.

Description

The induced migration of saline water into aquifers generally due to mismanagement or over pumping of aquifers in coastal areas.

Why is saline intrusion important?

When induced, saline intrusion results in the loss of valuable water resources because of a deterioration of groundwater quality.
