SUB DIRECTORATE: EDUCATION AND AWARENESS
Aim: To promote public education and awareness on water use efficiency, in order to ensure South Africa’s scarce water resource sustainability. To eliminate the culture of water wastage, and to change the human behavior into water saving country. Governed by the National Water Act (NWA), 1998, (Act No. 36 of 1998).
Functions:
To promote among all water use sectors and the general public, the understanding of and implementation of WC/WDM policies, strategies, guidelines, KPI’s, BMP’s, and regulations.

To communicate with water use sectors and communities and educate them on the need for and importance of WC/WDM as a strategy and imperative to cope with water scarcity in a semi-arid South Africa.
To establish and manage information hub for WC/WDM programmes, projects, devices, and legislation to support efficient use of water by all South Africans

ONGOING PROJECT - AWARENESS CAMPAIGN
ONGOING PROJECT - SOUTH AFRICAN YOUTH WATER PRIZE (SAYWP)
The South African Youth Water Prize (SAYWP) is science & technology based project. The competition begins at provincial level and then proceeds to the national level. The national winner represents South Africa in the Stockholm Junior Water Prize (SJWP) in Stockholm, Sweden to compete with learners from 30 countries annually. The Objectives are:
To promote the protection of South Africa’s natural resources;
To encourage and empower the youth to participate actively in integrated and community based water resource management;
To expose and enhance the interest of the youth to science and technology;
To motivate the youth to pursue water and sanitation management careers;
To provide opportunities for the youth to interact with their peers, in order share knowledge and experiences related to water and the environment, nationally and internationally
