Week-Iviki Lezihlahla is an annual national campaign, managed by the Department
of Water and Sanitation, aimed at reminding all South Africans of
the value of trees and to sustain our green heritage. The campaign takes place from the 1 - 7 September 2002.
This
year's celebrations will have international significance because the
campaign coincides with the World Summit on Sustainable Development, to be
held in Johannesburg from 24 August to 04 September 2002.
The
theme for Arbor Week-Iviki Lezihlahla is "TREES ARE LIFE - MEHLARE KE
BOPHELO."
This
theme embraces three areas in which trees enhance our lives:
Three
years ago, Minister Ronnie Kasrils initiated the Campaign of Remembrance,
with the primary focus of planting trees in memory of loved ones, we have
lost. This initiative was
broadly embraced by our society and this year's celebrations will be no
exception. Throughout
history, people have planted trees in memory of those we have lost.
Trees can serve as a living memory to people who have contributed
to our society. For this
reason, let us build a culture of memorial tree planting.
