In order to grow trees and have beautiful gardens, we need to water them. We are however aware that water is our most precious resource and that South Africa is a water scarce country. Our average rainfall is 450mm, which is well below the world’s average of 860mm. Even though some years we have a better rainfall than others and some areas in the country have more rain than others, we need to remember to use water sparingly.
- Water your garden before 10:00 or after 16:00 to avoid the rays of the sun evaporating all the water
- Re-use your bath and sink water on your garden
- It is better to water your garden well (longer) but less frequently as it encourages a deeper root system which results in stronger plants
- Where possible rather use a watering can or bucket than a hosepipe. A sprinkler in the garden uses almost as much water in an hour as a family of four in a day.
