An extra channel has been dredged in the estuary, resulting in considerable debate regarding its long term effect. Policy has ranged from dredging to keep it open, to building barriers to close it. At last count the Hippos had decided to reopen it themselves. While I certainly cannot address issues involving the transport of aquatic life along this channel, one can gain some understanding of its effect on the salinity and hydrology of the lake.
