The lake is joined to the sea via a long (approx. 20km) narrow tidal channel. The behaviour of this channel, averaged over a tidal cycle of 28 days was modeled by Huizenga and Boroto using the Mike-11 model.
The salinity model uses a function of lake level vs estuary outflow to model the net effect of the narrows.
This function, (see Figure 3), calculated by Huizenga
