The Department of Water and Sanitation will host a two-day Water and Sanitation Indaba to assess progress with implementation of the decisions made at the Water Summit in January 2024, which relates to addressing the findings of the 2023 Blue, Green and No drop reports and strengthening the role of Water Services Authorities in managing Water Service Providers.
The Indaba to be held in Midrand is expected to have the following outputs and outcomes:
-
a) Consensus on the state of water security in South Africa
-
b) Consensus on the key actions required to improve water security
-
c) A report on progress to date against the Action Plan from the Summit in January 2024
-
d) A new Action Plan, including the incomplete actions from the January 2024 Summit as well as new agreed-to actions.
The Department in 2023 released the full Blue Drop Report which provides an assessment of drinking water quality, and the full No Drop Report which focuses on water losses and non-revenue water in all municipalities in the country, as well as the Green Drop Progress Assessment Report to provide an update on the performance of wastewater management systems at municipal level.
The Blue, Green and No Drop Certification programmes are aimed at improving municipal drinking water quality, wastewater management as well as water conservation and demand management.
The reports keep the public and stakeholders informed and updated with credible data and information about the state of water and sanitation services in the country.
Water services institutions that achieve excellence in providing such services are recognised. Owners of the infrastructure are provided with advice and guidance as to how to improve their water and sanitation services.
It is against this background the Indaba will be taking place to find everlasting solutions to the country's challenges.
