The United Nations General Assembly recognized water and sanitation as a human right. Access to adequate sanitation plays a critical role in realizing personal dignity and security, social and psychological well-being, public health, poverty reduction, gender equality, economic development, and environmental sustainability.
The Chief Directorate Sanitation Services Support was established to plan, support, coordinate, monitor sanitation services across the country to achieve universal access to basic sanitation services to all in line with the National Development Plan.
Vision
Sanitation services in South Africa contribute to significantly to public health and are hygienic, equitable, sustainable and efficient for all people.
Functions of the Chief Directorate Sanitation Services Support
The function ensures that all people in South Africa have access to equitable and sustainable sanitation services and are currently performed through the following:
- The provision of sanitation services planning support to water services institutions
- The provision of sanitation operational support and capacity development to water and sanitation services institutions
- The monitoring and reporting on sanitation services performance across the sanitation service chain
- The development of sanitation strategies, frameworks, integrated plans and guidelines for the sanitation services
- To coordinate the implementation of sustainable sanitation programmes through innovation, hygiene and user education, developing funding models and advocacy to enable the sector to deliver efficiently
