INTRODUCTION/CONTEXT OF FAECAL SLUDGE MANAGEMENT (FSM) EDUCATIONAL AND AWARENESS MATERIALS TARGET GROUPS

Introduction

The Department of Water and Sanitation in consultation with all role-players developed National Faecal Sludge Management Strategy to guide the sector on safe management of faecal sludge across the sanitation service chain i.e. capture, containment, emptying, transport, treatment, safe reuse or disposal. To enable the implementation of the Strategy, the department developed educational and awareness materials to conscientize and educate all key role-players on their roles and responsibilities.

The following role-players are targets as they interact with faecal sludge across the sanitation service chain:

  • Users (Households, schools, clinics, churches etc)
  • Water Services Authorities
  • Water Services Providers and Business
  • Department of Water and Sanitation
  • Other government departments such as Departments of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment, FE, Agriculture, Land affairs, Health etc
  • Civil Society including Research Institutions

    1. Target Groups:

  • Users are any sanitation on-site user including household, schools, churches etc
  • Sanitation Service Provider work in sanitation service chain by providing services like emptying, transportation and disposing of sludge etc.
  • Water Service Authority are municipalities responsible for water and sanitation provision.
  • Department of Water and Sanitation oversees, regulate the implementation of FSM by municipalities.
  • Other Government Departments enables the implementation of FSM through policies and guidelines.
  • Civil Society consists of NGOs, Academia advocates access for services and payment for municipal services and educate about FSM solutions

    2. General Campaign Products/Resources

  • A3 Sanitation Service Chain Poster - A visual resources to explore sanitation service chain at a glance. It is ideal to be used as a wall poster in government and municipal building and public spaces.
  • A1 Sanitation Service Chain Poster - A visual resources to explore sanitation service chain and the roles of stakeholders - It is ideal to be used as a wall poster in government and municipal building and public spaces, workshops and conferences.
  • Wall Chart – Large free standing wall chart with rich depiction of sanitation landscape - to be used to facilitate participatory discussion and engage with various stakeholders around sanitation service chain.
  • Simplified Booklet (Quick Guide to Faecal Sludge Management) – A guide about FAQ and sanitation service chain and their possible answers. It is designed for quick and easy access to information that people ask.
  • Campaign Resource Video - A video summary about all campaign materials - to be used when planning advocacy campaign.
  • Educational FSM Resource Guide – A guide with an overview of all campaign resources that can be used to run advocacy campaigns- it can be used to plan Advocacy campaigns.
  • Facilitators Guide - A facilitators guideline to lead educational workshop including sanitation service chain in addressing local issues and case studies relevant to different stakeholder- to be used to plan a wall chart engagement with stakeholders.
  • Accordion Pamphlet - It is a foldable pamphlet that explains roles of key stakeholders in faecal sludge management - it must be handed out at training workshops, conferences and meetings.
  • Service Chain Videos - A brief overview of sanitation service chain- ideal to be share in social media and training workshop.
  • FAQ - Frequent Asked Question is a list of questions and answers that provide information about the topic, product, service etc. The purpose of FAQ is to provide a quick answer to common questions so that it enhances the user experience and reduce frustration with the benefit of time saving and improve customer satisfaction.

    3. Booklets And Audio Clips

    Users:

  • Keycard Set 1 & 2 - A set of graphics that tells a story of an on-site sanitation user, the quest to outsmart FSM germs through good sanitation and hygiene practices. It is ideal to be used on social media as a discussion point.
  • A3 Poster – it is a visual resource to explore what toilet users need to know about faecal sludge management throughout sanitation service chain. It is ideal to use a wall poster in public spaces and classrooms.
  • 3 minutes video is a fun, educational video to explore how users should confront germs by making sanitation their business. It is ideal on social media or used as advocacy campaign for users.
  • Audio Clip: a set of audio clips that explore how every household deal with faecal sludge in all stages of service chain i.e.- Containment, emptying & transportation, treatment, disposal and re-use. It is ideal for social media, radio and advocacy campaign with users
  • Nudges: a printable set of campaign illustrations to remind users about their role in FSM- it is ideal to stick in bathroom doors, hand washing stations at schools and other public spaces.

    Service Provider:

  • Keycards Set 1&2 - A set of graphics that tells a story of an on-site sanitation service provider and his team getting ready to provide services to the community. It is ideal to be used on social media as a discussion point. (same)
  • Training videos: it is a four-part video showing how a day for service provider looks like from containment to safe disposal & re-use- ideal to be shown during training and awareness sessions.
  • Audio Clips: Set of audio clips that explores how Lesedi and his team deals with faecal sludge throughout sanitation service chain. It can be shared on social media, radio as part of advocacy campaign with service provider.
  • A3: It’s a visual resource to explore what service providers need to know about FSM at a glance - ideal as a wall poster in public spaces and classrooms.
  • Nudges: A printable set of campaign illustration to emphasise the role os service provider in the FSM. it is ideal to stick in bathroom doors, hand washing stations at schools and other public spaces.

    Water Service Authority

  • Keycard Set 1 - A set of graphics that tells a story of how WSA representative interacts with communities and service providers to make safe FSM a reality. It is ideal to be used on social media as a discussion point.
  • Video - A video that explain the role of WSA in sanitation service chain. It is ideal to be shown during training sessions and workshops with WSA and should be shared on social media.
  • A3 Poster - A visual resource to be explored at a glance what WSA need to know about FSM and take actions they should take. It should be used during training as a wall poster.

    Department of Water And Sanitation

  • Keycard Set 1 - A set of graphics that tells a story of how DWS is committed to achieving SDG6.2.1 goals in ensuring success of FSM Strategy. It is ideal to be shared on social media and be used to provide discussion point with DWS, WSA, SP and Users.
  • Keycard Set 2 - A set of graphics that tells the story of how DWS is committed to FSM through various support initiatives. It is ideal to be shared on social media and be used to provide discussion point with DWS, WSA, SP and Users.

    Other Government Departments

  • Keycard - A set of graphics that tells the story of how other government departments are supporting FSM from planning to FSM solutions. It is ideal to be shared on social media and be used to provide discussion point with DWS, WSA, SP and Users.

    Civil Society (Is an organisation working and advocating for FSM)

  • Keycard - A set of graphics that tells the story of how civil society unites to ensure communities stay safe and FSM succeed.
  • A3 Poster - A visual resource to explore what civil society need to know at a glance. It is ideal to be used during training with NGOs. Academia and other members of civil society.
