Definition

The loss of water from a land area through transpiration of plants and evaporation from the soil and surface water bodies.

Description

The process by which water is discharged to the atmosphere as a result of evaporation from the soil and surface water, and transpiration by plants. Transpiration is the process by which water passes through living organisms, primarily plants, into the atmosphere.

Why is evapotranspiration important?

Evapotranspiration reduces groundwater recharge, and in some areas reduces the groundwater contribution to surface water bodies.
