Definition

Bodies of water, snow or ice on or above the surface of the earth (such as lakes, streams, ponds, wetlands, etc.).

Description

Surface water is water in rivers, lakes, estuaries and wetlands.  It is a component of the hydrological cycle and is studied by hydrologists.

Why is surface water important?

Surface water is an integral part of the hydrological system and provides about 85% of the fresh water consumed in South Africa.
