Definition

An extensive crack, break, or fracture in rocks.

Description

A general term to include natural fractures, cracks and openings in consolidated rock caused by bedding planes, joints, faults, etc.

Why are fissures important?

Fissures can form conduits for groundwater movement and groundwater contamination.
