Definition

Plants that habitually obtain water from below the water table or from the capillary fringe directly above the water table.

Description

Plants that have roots below the water table and abstract their moisture requirements directly from the saturated zone.

Why are phreatophytes important?

Phreatophytes are dependant on groundwater resources, and these resources need to be managed if these plants are not to be significantly impacted.
