Definition A nonpumping borehole, generally of small diameter, for measuring the elevation of a water table or collecting water samples. Description Usually a PVC pipe, with a plug at the bottom and slots at the desired depth for groundwater to flow into it. Piezometers are used to measure water levels, pressure readings and take water samples. A series of piezometers installed at a specific depth in a single borehole, is referred to as a piezometer cluster.
Why is a piezometer important? Differences in piezometric heads of different aquifers encountered in the same borehole can only be measured independently with piezometers. Also used as monitoring points in primary aquifers and environmentally sensitive areas.
