THE WATERING OF TREES AND GARDENS

In order to grow trees and have beautiful gardens, we need to water them. We are however aware that water is our most precious resource and that South Africa is a water scarce country. Our average rainfall is 450mm, which is well below the world’s average of 860mm. Even though some years we have a better rainfall than others and some areas in the country have more rain than others, we need to remember to use water sparingly.

  • Water your garden before 10:00 or after 16:00 to avoid the rays of the sun evaporating all the water

  • Re-use your bath and sink water on your garden

  • It is better to water your garden well (longer) but less frequently as it encourages a deeper root system which results in stronger plants

  • Where possible rather use a watering can or bucket than a hosepipe. A sprinkler in the garden uses almost as much water in an hour as a family of four in a day.
