Objective of the water reconciliation strategy
The overall objective of the water reconciliation strategy is to meet legitimate
current and future water requirements in the Olifants River catchment and
adjacent supply areas of Polokwane and Mokopane.
Two sub-objectives stem from this main objective, namely:
Development of a water reconciliation strategy
A study on the development of the water reconciliation strategy for the Olifants
River Water Supply System started in the beginning of 2010 and was completed
early in 2012. The objectives of the study were:
Address growing water demands as well as serious water quality problems
experienced in the catchment that would affect water availability;
Identify water resource management and development options;
Provide reconciliation interventions – both structural and
administrative/regulatory;
-
Facilitate communication and strengthen the partnership between DWS and key
stakeholders.
Continuation of the water reconciliation strategy
A Strategy Steering Committee has been established to take on the longer term
responsibility for ensuring that the strategy remains up-to-date, relevant, and
that the strategy and its updates is implemented.
The Strategy Steering Committee must oversee that:
The relevant institutions accept their implementation responsibilities;
The targets for water reconciliation interventions for reducing the water demands are achieved;
The increased yields as a result of structural interventions are realised;
The real water requirements and system yields are continuously checked against the estimated figures in the strategy and the strategy is adapted and updated when necessary.
