Definition An aquifer comprising unconsolidated material deposited by water, typically occurring adjacent to rivers and in buried paleochannels. Description Alluvial aquifers are generally composed of clay, silt, sand, gravel or similar unconsolidated material deposited by running water. Why is an alluvial aquifer important? Alluvial aquifers can store and transmit groundwater and can therefore be developed as a source of water. These aquifers are normally shallow and susceptible to contamination.
