Definition

Limestone and dolomite areas that possess a topography peculiar to and dependent upon underground solution and the diversion of surface waters to underground routes.

Description

The term karst is used to describe an area of limestone or other highly soluble rock, in which the landforms are of dominantly solutional origin and in which the drainage is underground in solutionally enlarged fissures and conduits (caves).

Why is a karst aquifer important?

Karst processes significantly change the flow, transport and storage behaviour of groundwater in such systems. Karst groundwater can be particularly vulnerable to pollution.
